Bastyr Naturopathy's False 'Scientific Vitalism' - SPI 08-2007: 01. the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports -- per Mercer, N. (ND Bastyr), a "naturopathic physician specializing in homeopathy [...&] adjunct faculty member, Bastyr University" -- in "Alternative Medicine: Homeopathy and Children" {08-01-2007} (see http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/health/325966_altmed02.html ): "homeopathy turns on the 'self heal' switch. Chinese medicine calls it the 'chi.' Naturopathic medicine calls it the 'vis' [nature's healing power]. Homeopathy calls it the 'vital force.' They all describe the energy [yikes!] inhabiting the human body that when stimulated moves the human system toward greater health [...] Bastyr [...] University [is] offering graduate and undergraduate degrees with[in] a multidisciplinary curriculum in science-based natural medicine." Note: for an ND, healing is due to a chi=vis=vital force figment {the vitalistic, as real as the Tooth Fairy}. Bastyr & Mercer's claim is that "the sciences" base 'the imaginary vitalistic.' In fact, according to Bastyr University, the "sciences" also base / contain the imaginary supernatural - spiritistic (see http://web.archive.org/web/20060901141026/http://www.bastyr.edu/news/news.asp?NewsID=710 ): "Bastyr University [...] is the leading university for natural health sciences in the United States [...] Bastyr University [...] its mission is to educate future leaders in the natural health sciences that integrate mind, body, spirit [the supernatural, ultimately], and nature [the vis, ultimately]." 02. two naturopathy schools' false claim of 'scientific vitalism & supernaturalism:' the analytical formula is simple: essential to the naturopathic is the vitalistic {a purposeful life spirit bioagency belief} (see http://thevitalismofnaturopathy.blogspot.com/ ) and the supernatural-spiritistic {and autoentheism / god power within} (see http://naturopathicspiritism0000.blogspot.com/ and http://aanpalliancesciencebasedclaim.blogspot.com/ ); naturopathy claims an overarching category of science (see http://thesciencethataintscience.blogspot.com/ ); science profoundly rejects the vitalistic (see http://novfsinscience.blogspot.com/ ) and the supernatural (see http://sciencerejectssupernaturalism0000.blogspot.com/ ). Note: paralleling Bastyr is another ND granting University, the University of Bridgeport, which claims a category of science (see http://sothisisscience0060.blogspot.com/ ) while simultaneously essentially vitalistic and supernatural (see http://web.archive.org/web/20070503154657/http://www1bpt.bridgeport.edu/pages/2411.asp ). 03. what of ethics? 03.a. modern medicine is obligated to the 'integrity of and appropriate use of scientific knowledge' (see http://www.annals.org/cgi/content/full/136/3/243 ), and 'a professions-level stringency of duty' (see http://depts.washington.edu/bioethx/topics/profes.html ). 03.b. journalism is also obligated to very stringent ethical standards (see http://www.spj.org/ethicscode.asp ). Note: SPI's 'Bastyr series' is academic and science journalism at its worst, totally misrepresenting what is actually / in fact scientific without the slightest mention of the false nature of their misrepresentation. Obviously, ethical standards are being triply trodden upon: per those of education, medicine, and journalism. 04. "danger, Will Robinson...[USP=] unethical sectarian pseudoscience!!!" Note: SPI does not properly identify this article for what it is, an advertisement & propaganda for a USP. (for further enlightenment, visit http://standtoyourduty.blogspot.com ).
